Rare Modernist Winifred Mason Chenet D'haiti Sunburst Disk Brass Copper Earrings

  
Rare modernist brass and copper mixed metal circular earrings. From famous African American jewelry designer Winifred Mason Chenet (1912 - 1993) - active in New York beginning in the 1940's and later in Haiti. She was i nspired by Caribbean West Indian and Voodoo cultures / patterns and her works reflect that. She was a skilled teacher and had several students to continue in her style and become well known in their own right such as Art Smith and Jean Baptiste Pericles Haiti.

She worked primarily with metals. Her jewelry is desirable, rare, and museum quality. It is bound to increase in collectibility as pieces are limited to only what is scarcely available. Her patterns were always abstract and modernistic. I have seen these this design named /called both "disks" and "sunburst".

Double layered stepped brass bases with highly textured radiating lines. Domed copper center with subtle accents. Unique and eye catching in every way.

Each of her pieces were said to be unique, even if just ever so slightly. Screw on backs should allow most anyone to wear these - pierced ears or not.

She married around 1945 and began marking using her married name Chenet. Ready for your ears, collection, or gift giving - you will love these!

MARKINGS = chenet d'HAITI stamped on the back of each earring - yes... Often you will find just one piece has markings on earrings and also cufflinks.

MEASUREMENTS = Each aprox 1 in diameter. Very minor spotting / patina / tarnish - mainly on one earring back. I haven't tried to polish or clean it off at all.

Screw back in good working order. View & enlarge photographs to closely inspect fine details and to determine the amount of patina, and/or wear.

Most older pieces by nature normally have some degree of both and, unless severe, aren't considered damaged. I will do my best to note anything glaring or distracting.
