Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a gorgeous 19th Century French embossed bronze and green onyx large inkwell on stand decorated with Masonic Freemason symbols. The bronze platform below the inkwell has an embossed Masonic cross symbol and on the bottom of the inkwell base is an embossed medallion with "Carpe Diem" printed in a scroll at the top with Masonic square and compass below. "Carpe Diem" is a Latin phrase that translates "Seize the Day" or more loosely translates "Enjoy yourself while you have the chance".

Also stamped in an oval medallion is the word "Depose". This impressive egg shaped inkwell has a lift lid which exposes the bronze inkwell insert and is mounted on a very decorative base with embossed decoration in a wide frame around an oval green onyx platform with a pen holder attached. Measures 6 3/4" high, 11 1/4" long and 7 1/8 wide. This nice inkstand is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws.

The bronze has naturally aged patina with no dark spots or pitting. The onyx is clean and free of chips.

The inkwell's hinge is in good condition and free of damage and works smoothly, however, there is a slight looseness in movement from side to side. This could easily be resolved by replacing the hinge's pin. There is also some minor discoloration on the flat bronze liner on the inside of lid. Have been in the Antiques business for over 30 years and try to describe our items as accurately as possible. We are happy to answer any questions and always appreciate your business!
